Some love stories don’t just cross paths — they cross continents.

For Deborah & Craig, their journey to one of life’s greatest moments took them from Switzerland all the way to the heart of South Africa.

Surrounded by ancient sandstone formations, rugged mountains and the untouched wilderness of Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve, they chose an intimate destination elopement that was deeply personal, adventurous and centred around what mattered most to them.

Their family.

And with their two wonderful twins by their side, their wedding day became so much more than simply saying “I do.”

It became a celebration of the family they had already built, the adventures they had shared and the journey that still lies ahead.

From Switzerland to South Africa

There is something incredibly special about a couple choosing to travel across the world to get married.

Destination weddings require a certain sense of adventure — and a lot of trust.

For Deborah & Craig, that journey began in Switzerland and eventually brought them to the extraordinary landscape of Kagga Kamma in South Africa.

Planning an elopement from another country meant months of conversations, planning across time zones and putting their trust in a photography and videography team they had never met in person.

For us, it was an absolute privilege to be part of that journey.

We know that when couples travel internationally for their wedding, there is a huge amount of trust involved. They are not simply booking a photographer.

They’re trusting us to understand their vision, help them feel comfortable and capture a once-in-a-lifetime experience that they have travelled thousands of kilometres to create.

We don’t take that trust lightly.

One of the most beautiful things about Deborah & Craig’s wedding was that their twin boys were there to experience it all with them.

Sometimes when we think about elopements, we picture just two people disappearing somewhere beautiful to exchange their vows.

But an elopement doesn’t have to mean leaving everyone behind.

It can be an intimate celebration with the people who matter most.

For Deborah & Craig, having their children there made the experience even more meaningful.

Watching their twins witness their parents exchange vows, laugh together and explore the landscape around them was a beautiful reminder that a wedding isn’t only about the beginning of a marriage.

It’s also about celebrating the family and life you’ve already created together.

There were moments of laughter, quiet connection and plenty of opportunities for the four of them to simply enjoy being together.

Those are the moments that made this elopement so special to photograph.

Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve: A Truly Extraordinary Setting

Kagga Kamma is unlike almost anywhere else in the Western Cape.

Located in the Cederberg region, the reserve is surrounded by dramatic sandstone formations, open plains and rugged mountain landscapes.

It’s a place where you can feel completely removed from everyday life. And that makes it an incredible destination for an intimate wedding or elopement. The landscape doesn’t simply provide a backdrop for the photographs.

It becomes part of the story.

Ancient rock formations tower above you. The mountains stretch into the distance. The landscape changes colour as the sun moves across the sky. And when golden hour arrives, the sandstone seems to glow.

For a destination elopement, it’s difficult to imagine a more memorable setting.

Golden Hour Beneath the African Sky

As the afternoon moved towards evening, the light began to change. The sun dipped behind the sandstone formations and everything was washed in warm, golden light.

This is one of our favourite parts of photographing weddings.

The formalities are over. The nerves have disappeared. Everyone is relaxed. And suddenly there’s time to simply explore.

For Deborah & Craig, we were able to use this beautiful light to create photographs of the two of them, as well as their family, surrounded by the extraordinary Kagga Kamma landscape.

These are the photographs that become more meaningful with time. Not simply because they show what the landscape looked like, but because they bring back the feeling of being there.

The four of them together. The African sky above them. The mountains surrounding them. And the beginning of another chapter in their story.

Why Choose a South African Elopement?

For international couples, South Africa offers something incredibly special.

It’s a destination where a wedding can become part of a much larger adventure.

You can exchange vows in the mountains, celebrate among the vineyards, explore the coastline or disappear into the wilderness of a private reserve.

And afterwards, you can turn your wedding trip into a honeymoon adventure.

For couples travelling from Switzerland, Europe, Australia, the UK or elsewhere in the world, South Africa offers an incredible combination of natural beauty, diverse landscapes, luxury accommodation and unforgettable experiences.

And the Western Cape is particularly special.

Within a few hours, you can experience completely different environments — from the Cape Winelands and dramatic mountain ranges to rugged coastlines and remote wilderness.

Planning an Elopement From Overseas

Planning a destination elopement from another country can seem daunting at first.

But that’s also part of the adventure.

Start with the location

Think about the experience you want rather than simply searching for a wedding venue.

Do you dream of mountains?

Wilderness?

Wine country?

The ocean?

Once you know what you want your wedding day to feel like, finding the right location becomes much easier.

Build your day around the experience

An elopement doesn’t need to be a few hours of photographs followed by a ceremony.

Your wedding day can be an experience rather than a schedule of formalities.

Choose a photographer you trust

When you’re planning from overseas, your photographer becomes an important part of your planning team.

Look for someone whose work you genuinely love, but also someone whose communication style makes you feel comfortable. You’ll be trusting them with some of the most important memories of your life.

Leave room for the unexpected

Some of the best moments happen when you aren’t following the plan.

Leave room for the magic to happen.

A Wedding Day That Was Truly About Them

Looking back at Deborah & Craig’s elopement, what stands out most isn’t just the spectacular location.

It’s the feeling. It was relaxed. It was intimate. It was adventurous.

And most importantly, it felt like them.

Their wedding wasn’t about following a traditional formula.

It was about bringing their family together in an extraordinary place and creating memories they could share for years to come.

And that is one of the things we love most about elopements. You get to decide what matters.

Is Kagga Kamma a good location for an elopement?

Yes. Its secluded wilderness setting and dramatic landscapes make Kagga Kamma particularly suited to couples looking for an intimate and adventurous destination wedding or elopement.

Yes. South Africa is a popular destination for international couples wanting to combine their wedding with a holiday or honeymoon. Couples should ensure they understand South Africa’s current legal marriage requirements and work with an authorised marriage officer when planning a legally recognised ceremony.

Can we bring our children to our elopement?

Of course. There are no rules saying couples have to get ready separately.

The Western Cape is particularly popular because couples can combine their wedding with a honeymoon or extended holiday.

How far is Kagga Kamma from Cape Town?
