A love story in the woods, a beautiful bride, and a day that felt a little bit like a fairytale.
Some wedding venues are beautiful. And then there are places that seem to have a little bit of magic woven into them. Die Woud is one of those places.
Hidden among the trees, surrounded by an enchanting forest landscape, it was the perfect setting for Alicia and Ryan’s wedding day. From the moment we arrived, it felt like we had stepped into another world — and then Alicia arrived in her beautiful wedding dress and somehow made the whole scene feel even more magical.
For us at Flying Swan Media, this wedding was extra special too.
Die Woud had been sitting firmly on our #bucketlist of venues we wanted to photograph and film, so getting the opportunity to finally capture a wedding there was something we had been looking forward to for a long time.
And then, of course, Alicia and Ryan gave us the most beautiful story to photograph.
A Wedding Straight Out of a Fairytale
There are some moments on a wedding day that stay with you. Watching a bride walk down the aisle is always one of them. But when that aisle winds through an enchanted forest, surrounded by towering trees and dappled light, it becomes something else entirely.
Alicia’s entrance was one of those moments.
Radiant in her Maggie Sottero wedding dress, she made her way through the forest to meet Ryan, and for a moment it felt as though the rest of the world had disappeared. There was just the two of them.
The anticipation. The emotion. And the realisation that this was the moment they had been waiting for. It was beautiful, intimate and completely magical.
Getting Married Among the Trees
What makes a forest wedding so special is the way nature becomes part of the celebration.
At Die Woud, there was no need to manufacture a backdrop. The trees, the light, the textures and the surrounding landscape created everything we needed.
Alicia and Ryan’s ceremony felt beautifully connected to the environment around them. There was something incredibly romantic about standing beneath the trees and watching two people promise to spend their lives together.
And as wedding photographers, it was an absolute dream.
The changing light filtering through the trees gave us so many different opportunities throughout the day, from soft and intimate portraits to those wider photographs that really show the scale and atmosphere of the venue.
It was one of those places where everywhere you looked, there was another photograph waiting to happen.
Alicia’s Maggie Sottero Wedding Dress
Alicia looked absolutely incredible in her Maggie Sottero Designs wedding dress, sourced through Ever After Bridalwear.
The dress was the perfect combination of elegance and romance, and against the natural backdrop of Die Woud, it looked as though it belonged there.
There is something about a beautiful wedding dress moving through a forest that never gets old. The textures of the trees, the soft light and the movement of the fabric all came together beautifully. And Alicia wore it effortlessly.
The Little Moments That Made Their Day
While the big moments are what initially draw us to a wedding day, it is usually the smaller moments that end up becoming some of our favourite photographs.
The nervous excitement before the ceremony. A glance between Alicia and Ryan. The reaction of family and friends. The laughter that happens when nobody is thinking about the camera. The hugs after the ceremony. The moments when the couple finally gets a chance to step away from everything and simply be together. Those are the moments we are always looking for.
Because years from now, when the flowers have long since disappeared and the wedding day exists only in memory, these are the things that will bring it all back.
Romantic Portraits in the Forest
After the ceremony, we took some time with Alicia and Ryan to explore the beautiful surroundings of Die Woud.
This is one of the things we love about photographing weddings in natural settings. Rather than moving from one constructed backdrop to another, you can simply wander.
Follow the light. Find a beautiful patch of forest. Stop when something catches your eye. Let the couple interact naturally. And allow the surroundings to become part of the photographs.
Alicia and Ryan were wonderful to photograph. There was an ease between them that made it possible to capture both the romance and the fun of being newly married.
Their portraits feel intimate without being overly posed, and the forest gives the images that unmistakable fairytale quality.
Celebrating With Family & Friends
Of course, a wedding isn’t just about the couple.
It is about the people who have helped shape their lives and who are there to celebrate this next chapter with them.
Alicia and Ryan’s reception was filled with all the things you hope for at a wedding celebration — good food, music, laughter, dancing and plenty of time spent with the people they love.
With Leon Carstens behind the music, the dance floor didn’t stay quiet for long.
The beautiful wedding cake by Odette Marais of Baked by Odette added another special touch, while Socialspin360 brought plenty of fun to the reception with their 360° video booth.
And after all the formalities of the day, there was something lovely about watching everyone simply relax and celebrate together.
A Team That Brought It All Together
Beautiful weddings are always the result of a lot of people working behind the scenes, and Alicia and Ryan had an incredible team bringing their vision together.
Die Woud provided the unforgettable forest setting, while the wedding dress came from Maggie Sottero Designs through Ever After Bridalwear.
Mr Suit Hire Cape Gate took care of the wedding suits, with the bridesmaids dressed by Emsie Smith Moi Klere.
Lindy Laatson Skoonheid created Alicia’s beautiful hair and makeup look, while Leon Carstens kept the celebrations going throughout the reception.
The wedding cake was created by Odette Marais – Baked by Odette, and Socialspin360 added an extra element of fun with their 360° video booth.
And then there was us.
Flying Swan Media, documenting the day through both photography and videography.
Ticking Die Woud Off Our Bucket List
There is something quite special about photographing a venue you’ve wanted to work at for years.
We’ve photographed weddings in so many beautiful places throughout the Western Cape, but Die Woud had always been one of those venues we hoped we’d eventually get to experience behind the camera.
Alicia and Ryan gave us that opportunity.
And we couldn’t have asked for a better wedding to finally tick it off our list.
The combination of the venue, the forest, the beautiful details and, most importantly, Alicia and Ryan themselves made this a wedding we’ll remember for a long time.
Thank you, Alicia and Ryan, for trusting us with such an important part of your story — and for helping us tick a pretty special item off our own bucket list.
Capturing the Magic
For us, wedding photography and videography is about more than documenting what happened.
It’s about capturing how it felt. The anticipation before the ceremony. The way Ryan looked at Alicia as she walked towards him. The sound of everyone celebrating after they said “I do.” The quiet moments when it was finally just the two of them. The light through the trees. The laughter. The dancing.
All the little things that make a wedding uniquely yours.
Because when you look back at your wedding photographs and film years from now, we want you to feel like you’re stepping back into that day.
Back into the forest. Back into the moment. Back into the beginning of your life together.
