There are some wedding days that seem to make perfect sense from the moment you arrive.
Anel and Phillip’s wedding at Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve was one of those days.
Surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Cederberg, with the people closest to them by their side, they celebrated their marriage in a way that felt completely true to who they are.
It was intimate. It was relaxed. It was full of love.
And, perhaps most importantly, it was deeply connected to nature.
A Love for Nature at the Heart of Their Wedding
For Anel and Phillip, nature has never simply been something beautiful to look at.
Both are deeply passionate about nature conservation and work as game rangers, so the natural world forms a meaningful part of their everyday lives. It influences how they see the world, where they spend their time and the things they care about.
So when they began thinking about where they wanted to get married, it felt only natural that they would choose somewhere where they could be surrounded by the wilderness they both love.
Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve, with its dramatic sandstone formations, open landscapes and incredible sense of seclusion, was the perfect fit.
Their wedding wasn’t about bringing nature into a traditional wedding venue.
Instead, they brought their wedding into nature.
And somehow, that feels like a much better description of their day.
An Intimate Wedding With Their Favourite People
Anel and Phillip chose to keep their wedding wonderfully small, travelling to Kagga Kamma with only their closest family.
There is something incredibly special about celebrating a marriage this way.
With a smaller group, there is no rush to make sure you have spoken to everyone in a room filled with hundreds of people. There is more space to breathe, to laugh, to enjoy the little moments and, most importantly, to actually spend time with the people who have travelled this journey with you.
Their wedding felt less like a big production and more like a shared adventure.
Their family wasn’t simply there to watch them get married. They were part of the experience.
There were conversations, laughter, quiet moments and all those little interactions that make a wedding day feel like your wedding day rather than simply an event that needs to be ticked off a schedule.
And in a place as remote and beautiful as Kagga Kamma, there was plenty of time to simply take it all in.
Getting Married in the Cederberg
There is something about the Cederberg landscape that photographs differently.
The enormous sandstone formations, earthy colours and wide-open skies create a sense of scale that you simply can’t recreate in a traditional wedding venue.
For Anel and Phillip, it was the perfect backdrop.
Their ceremony took place surrounded by the landscape they both love, with their closest family there to witness them make this commitment to one another.
There was no need for anything overly complicated.
The setting already had everything they needed.
The mountains and rocks. The open sky. The quiet. Their family. And each other.
Sometimes the most beautiful weddings are the ones where you don’t need to add very much at all.
Exploring Kagga Kamma Together
One of our favourite things about photographing an elopement is that the day doesn’t have to feel like a series of formalities.
Once the ceremony was over, there was time for Anel and Phillip to simply enjoy being together.
And what better place to do that than somewhere as extraordinary as Kagga Kamma?
We explored the surrounding landscape with them, letting the environment naturally become part of their photographs.
The sandstone formations gave their portraits a dramatic backdrop, while the vastness of the landscape created those beautiful, quiet frames where the two of them almost seem completely alone in the world.
And perhaps that is what makes these photographs so special.
They don’t just show a couple who got married at Kagga Kamma.
They show Anel and Phillip in a place that means something to them.
A place that reflects their love of nature, their sense of adventure and the life they have chosen to share.
A Wedding That Felt Like Them
It is easy to get caught up in what a wedding is supposed to look like.
The venue. The guest list. The décor. The timeline. The traditions.
But Anel and Phillip’s wedding was a lovely reminder that there really isn’t one right way to get married.
You can choose a huge celebration with everyone you know.
Or you can take the people you love most into the wilderness and promise to spend the rest of your life together.
For these two, the second option felt right.
Their wedding was personal without being complicated. Beautiful without trying too hard. Adventurous without losing sight of the people who mattered most.
It was simply them.
And that is always our favourite kind of wedding to photograph.
Capturing Their Kagga Kamma Wedding
We were incredibly honoured to be part of Anel and Phillip’s day and to document their intimate Kagga Kamma elopement through both photography and film.

For us, photographing and filming a wedding like this isn’t only about creating beautiful portraits.
It’s about remembering how the day felt.
The way their family looked at them during the ceremony. The laughter between moments. The quiet pauses. The landscape around them. The feeling of walking through the Cederberg together.
Those are the things that become even more meaningful as the years pass.
Because one day, the flowers will be gone, the details will be packed away and the wedding day itself will exist only in memory.

It was such a privilege to witness the beginning of this next chapter surrounded by the people you love and a landscape that represents so much of who you are.
