Just the person you love, the ocean stretching out in front of you, a little wind in your hair and the people who matter most gathered close.
That was the feeling behind this Langebaan Beach elopement styled shoot.
Created as inspiration for couples dreaming of an intimate coastal wedding, this shoot brought together an incredible team of local wedding creatives to imagine what a relaxed, romantic beach elopement could look and feel like.
Looking back now, though, these photographs hold a much deeper meaning for us.
An Elopement by the Ocean
Langebaan has a certain magic about it.
The soft white sand, turquoise water and endless West Coast skies create a setting that feels effortlessly beautiful. It is the kind of place where you can imagine leaving the formalities behind and simply celebrating your love.
For this shoot, we wanted to embrace that feeling.
Rather than creating something overly elaborate, the styling was kept romantic, natural and relaxed. The idea was to show couples that an intimate wedding can still feel incredibly special — even when the guest list is tiny and the setting is wonderfully uncomplicated.
Imagine exchanging vows with the ocean behind you, celebrating with a beautifully styled table for two, and then kicking off your shoes to wander along the beach together.
That is the kind of wedding day we had in mind.
Keeping the Styling Simple
One of the things we love about an elopement is that it gives you permission to strip everything back.
You don’t need to fill a massive venue with décor. You don’t need to worry about whether every chair is perfectly positioned or whether there are enough centrepieces for a hundred guests.
Instead, you can focus on a few beautiful details that make the experience feel special.
For our Langebaan shoot, the styling complemented the natural surroundings rather than competing with them.
The macramé details, candles and carefully chosen décor created a warm, bohemian feel against the simplicity of the beach.
The result was romantic without feeling overly styled.
Because ultimately, the ocean was always going to be the star.
The Bride & Groom
For the bride’s look, we wanted something that felt elegant but still completely at home on the beach.
Her dress from Didi Couture brought the romance, while the relaxed coastal setting kept the overall look effortless.
Her hair and makeup by Makeup & Hair by MB completed the look beautifully, with a style that felt polished without losing that natural beachside feeling.
For the groom, The Tux Tailor brought a timeless sophistication to the shoot.
We loved the contrast between formal wedding attire and the laid-back surroundings.
It is a reminder that your wedding doesn’t have to fit neatly into one category.
You can be dressed beautifully and still run barefoot into the ocean afterwards.
And honestly, we think that’s exactly how it should be.
From Wedding Portraits to a Beach Adventure
From a photography perspective, beach elopements give you so much freedom.
There are no walls or fixed backgrounds. The landscape constantly changes with the light, the wind and the movement of the water.
For us, that creates an opportunity to photograph couples in a way that feels natural rather than overly posed.
We wanted the images from this shoot to feel like memories rather than a catalogue.
The couple walking together. A quiet moment by the water. The wind catching the bride’s dress. Bare feet in the sand. A little laughter between photographs.
Those are the moments we would want an actual couple to remember from their elopement.
A Little Bit of “Trash the Dress”
Of course, no beach shoot would be complete without getting a little closer to the water.
What started as an elegant bridal inspiration session eventually became a chance to embrace one of our favourite parts of beach photography — getting the dress wet and letting the couple have some fun.
There is something wonderfully liberating about a bride who doesn’t have to worry about keeping the hem of her dress perfectly clean.
After all, you only get married once. Why not get your feet wet?
The water shots brought a completely different energy to the shoot. The images became more playful and spontaneous, and the beach transformed from a beautiful backdrop into part of the experience itself.

More Than a Styled Shoot
There is a story behind these photographs that makes them especially precious to us.
Le Jean and Stiaan weren’t simply models we brought in for a styled shoot.
They were one of our Flying Swan Media couples.
We first met them for their pre-wedding shoot, then had the privilege of photographing and filming their wedding. We stayed in touch over the years, and what began as a client relationship grew into a genuine friendship and connection that we valued deeply.
When they travelled back to South Africa from the USA for the holidays, we would often catch up and talk about doing another creative shoot together.
In fact, we had a little plan.
We wanted to make it something of an annual tradition — an inspirational shoot whenever they were back in South Africa.
This Langebaan shoot was the beginning of that idea.
At the time, we had no idea just how significant these photographs would become.
Remembering Stiaan
Sadly, Stiaan passed away in 2025.
It is difficult to put into words what these photographs mean to us now.
We had an incredible connection with Le Jean and Stiaan, and having shared so many milestones with them — from their pre-wedding shoot, to their wedding day, and then this shoot on the beach — these aren’t simply images from a styled shoot in our archive.
They are memories of a couple we cared about.
Memories of laughter, friendship and a friendship that continued long after their wedding day was over.
We had looked forward to the next time they would return from the USA, to catching up again and creating something new together.
We feel incredibly grateful that we got to create this one.
There is something particularly poignant about seeing these photographs now.
Stiaan is remembered here exactly as we knew him — full of life, alongside the love of his life, Le Jean, doing something they loved and creating memories together.
For us, these photographs will always be about much more than wedding inspiration.
They are a little piece of a friendship that we will always treasure.
An Elopement by the Sea
Perhaps that is also why the idea behind this shoot resonates with us so much.
At its heart, an elopement is about stripping everything back to what really matters.
- The person beside you.
- The people you love.
- The places that mean something.
- The memories you create together.
And sometimes, those memories become far more precious than you ever realise at the time.
Our hope with this shoot was to inspire couples to think beyond the traditional wedding day — to imagine something intimate, adventurous and entirely their own.
But looking back now, it has also reminded us why we do what we do.
We don’t photograph weddings simply to create beautiful images.
We photograph them because life moves incredibly quickly.
People change. Places change. Years pass. And photographs give us something tangible to hold onto.
