The coldest April day… and yet, the warmest kind of love.
Some wedding days arrive wrapped in perfect sunshine. And then there are days like Marlette and Jorik’s. A little wild. A little windy. Definitely cold. But somehow, none of that really mattered.
Because standing there with these two, it was impossible not to feel the warmth of what was happening around them. The kind of love that doesn’t need perfect weather, elaborate plans or a picture-perfect forecast.
Just two people who are completely certain about each other.
Marlette and Jorik celebrated their wedding at The One Heaven & Earth, surrounded by beautiful details, incredible people and a whole lot of wind.
And honestly? It suited them perfectly.
A Day That Refused to Go According to the Weather Forecast
April in the Western Cape can be unpredictable. One day you’re enjoying the last hints of summer, and the next you’re reaching for every jacket you can find. Their wedding day decided to lean firmly into the latter.
It was cold. The wind had other plans. And yet, somehow, the weather became part of what made their day so memorable. Instead of allowing the conditions to take over, Marlette and Jorik simply embraced them.
There were warm hugs, laughter between moments, jackets being wrapped around shoulders and plenty of those little spontaneous moments that you simply can’t plan for.
And as wedding photographers and filmmakers, those are the moments we love most. Because when things don’t go exactly according to plan, people stop performing and start simply being themselves.
Marlette & Jorik
There was an ease between Marlette and Jorik that made photographing them incredibly natural. They didn’t need much direction. They were comfortable together, completely present in the moment and clearly more interested in each other than in whether everything around them was perfectly in place.
And perhaps that’s why their portraits feel the way they do.
There is movement in them. Wind catching Marlette’s dress. Hair blowing across faces. The two of them holding on to one another. A little laughter. A little chaos. And a whole lot of connection. The weather didn’t take away from their photographs. It gave them character.
A Beautiful Celebration at The One Heaven & Earth
The One Heaven & Earth provided a beautiful setting for their celebration, with the surrounding landscape creating a sense of space and intimacy.
The styling brought warmth and personality into the day, creating a beautiful contrast to the cool April weather outside.
Every little detail came together to create a celebration that felt considered without feeling overly formal. From the décor and florals to the food and music, there were so many talented creatives working behind the scenes to make the day what it was.
And then there was Marlette and Jorik at the centre of it all. Because ultimately, no matter how beautiful the details are, the heart of a wedding will always be the people.
The Little Moments Between Everything
One of our favourite things about wedding days is everything that happens in between the big moments.
- The nervous anticipation before the ceremony.
- The look between two people when they finally see each other.
- Friends laughing together.
- Family members wiping away a tear.
- A quick hug. A stolen kiss.
- Someone fixing a dress.
- Someone trying to keep their hair in place when the wind has completely different ideas.
These are the moments that tell the real story of a wedding.
And Marlette and Jorik’s day was full of them. It felt genuine and unforced, with enough room for the day to unfold naturally.
When the Wind Becomes Part of the Story
There is something beautifully cinematic about photographing a wedding in dramatic weather.
The light changes. The landscape feels different. The wind creates movement in the dress and veil. And suddenly, what might have initially felt like an inconvenience becomes part of the visual story.
For Marlette and Jorik, the wind gave their portraits a sense of movement and energy. Rather than fighting it, we embraced it. Because sometimes the most memorable wedding photographs are created when you stop trying to control everything.
You let the dress move. You let the hair blow. You let the couple laugh. And you let the landscape do what it wants to do. The result is something that feels alive.
Warm Love on a Very Cold Day
Looking back at Marlette and Jorik’s wedding, the weather is one of the first things we remember.
Not because it made the day difficult. But because it became part of the story. It was the coldest April day, but somehow it was also filled with so much warmth. Warmth from their families. Warmth from their friends.
Warmth from the laughter and hugs throughout the day. And most of all, the warmth between two people who had chosen each other. There is something quite beautiful about that. A wedding doesn’t have to happen under blue skies to be perfect.
Sometimes the most beautiful stories happen when the weather isn’t perfect and you simply carry on anyway.
A Team of Talented Creatives
A wedding like this is always the result of many talented people working together behind the scenes. The celebration at The One Heaven & Earth was brought together by an incredible creative team.
WTS Events worked alongside the couple to bring the planning and coordination together, while Pierre Muller and Concept Food took care of the culinary experience.
Makeup & Hair by MB, with our dear friend Madeleine, created Marlette’s beautiful bridal look, while Jean DJ Chapo brought the music and atmosphere to the celebration.
Muse Concepts Decor Hire & Style brought the styling and décor together, with Bunches for Africa adding the floral touches that completed the setting.
And of course, we had the privilege of documenting it all through both photography and videography.
Photographing & Filming Marlette & Jorik’s Wedding
For us at Flying Swan Media, the goal is never simply to create beautiful wedding photographs.
We want to create something that brings you back. Back to the feeling of the day. Back to the people who were there. Back to the way you looked at one another. Back to the wind. Back to the laughter.
Back to all the little moments that you may not even realise are happening at the time. Because years from now, those are the things you’ll want to remember. Not whether every detail went according to plan. Not whether the weather was perfect.
But how it felt to stand beside the person you love and realise that this was the beginning of your next chapter together.
